Design Week Kyoto 2017, to be held from February 19th (Sun.) to 26th (Sun.), 2017, is an “open factory” event in the midst of Kyoto City, the eternal capital of Japan since 794 as well as the center of all kinds of artisans and craftsmanship.
Participants visit the ‘sites’ such as studios and factories in the city and directly experience how an item is created.
Most of the ‘sites’ are generally closed to the public visit, so Design Week Kyoto is a great opportunity not only to watch how people usually work in their studio/factory but to communicate with them thus allowing all people involved a chance to discover something new and to broaden their ‘sights’ for generating new ideas and manufacturing structures.
Design Week Kyoto is a rare opportunity for everybody to visit the sites behind the curtain in Kyoto.
Opening period: February 19th to 26th, 2017
Hosted by: Design Week Kyoto Executive committee
Kyoto has cultivated an array of sophisticated cultural traditions in its long history over the past 1200 years.
One of them is the craftsmanship which a number of artisans and craftspeople have striven to adapt and improve over many generations.
Traditional craftsmanship in Kyoto has been evolved into modern crafts and high-tech industries.
Visiting a studio and factory is the best way to witness this progression directly, however, such a wish rarely comes true because studios and factories are usually not places for open interaction.
Design Week Kyoto is a special opportunity for those who are interested in craftsmanship and manufacturing industries and also for the craftspeople themselves. During the event period, a variety of studios and factories are open where people, regardless of nationality, can communicate with each other and where new ideas and collaborations will be born. For us, “Design” is “de + sign,” which is to ‘de’couple our sight and conceptions from the ‘signs’ we commonly see. We believe that decoupling our ‘fixed’ concepts is necessary to create the new things needed in the times we live in today. We hope that the Design Week Kyoto can generate a number of wonderful interactions amongst people and that Kyoto will become an even more creative city.
